CAFY & ABRHS SADD Win Grants for Underage Drinking and Distracted Driving Campaigns

April 5, 2010—The Community Alliance for Youth (CAFY) and ABRHS/SADD (Acton Boxborough Regional High School/Students Against Destructive Decisions) were awarded two Massachusetts SADD mini grants of $600 this year to support educational campaigns about the risks of Underage Drinking/Impaired Driving and Distracted Driving. On April 5, they issued a press release to announce their campaigns to raise awareness of these risky behaviors. As part of the campaign, CAFY commissioned this Distracted Driving poster.

June 25, 2009—The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) issued a press release on June 18, 2009, reporting on results of a new study that revealed a father's alcohol use may significantly affect their adolescent's use of alcohol and drugs. Analyses of 2002 through 2007 data drawn from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health, involving responses from 11,056 fathers and 9,537 father-child respondent pairs served as the basis of this study.


ABRHS SADD Announcement

January 15, 2009. The84.org recently awarded a $300 mini-grant to Acton-Boxborough Regional High School SADD to help promote a statewide tobacco prevention movement! The84.org represents the 84% of teens in Massachusetts who do not smoke tobacco. ABHRS SADD plans to use the $300 grant to help fund a "fun" active, substance-free SADDAPALOOZA event for AB students and to share the "Kick Butts" message at Project Wellness.

CAFY, in conjuction with Susan Bohmiller and her very enthusiastic group of SADD students at ABHRS, collaborated on this grant. For information about Mass Youth Against Tobacco grants, visit www.makesmokinghistory.com.

'SAFE HOMES' Program

December 6, 2007. The Community Alliance for Youth has started the Safe Homes program in Acton and Boxborough. Families who join the program agree to provide a safe and supervised home without drugs or alcohol for teen parties. Read more...

Board Endorses SAFE HOMES

Thurs. Oct. 11, 2007. The Board of Selectman joined the School Committee and the Acton Police Department in endorsing a program asking parents to pledge not to allow underage drinking in their homes. Read more...

AB PTSO Newsletters

When Teens Host Parties at Home; When Teens Attend Parties

Jan Couch, co-chair of the Acton-Boxborough Regional Parent Teacher Student Organization, worked with several members of CAFY to prepare a two-part checklist in the April and May 2007 PTSO Newsletters. The first part, When Teens Host a Party at Home, provides helpful advice if you and your teen are hosting a party at your house. The second part, When Your Teen Attends a Party, includes safety guidelines and web resources for teens going out to parties.

Acton-Boxborough Comes Together for Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking

On May 4, the Acton-Boxborough Community became one of hundreds of communities nationwide that held a Town Hall Meeting on Underage Drinking Prevention to alert the community to new research on the risks of underage drinking and empower the community to take action to stop it. The Federal government's Interagency Coordinating Committee for the Prevention of Underage Drinking (ICCPUD) is supporting Town Hall Meetings that are taking place in communities across America.
